The Large Tumbler Ruler

Transcript:

Hi, it’s Jenny from, the Missouri Star Quilt Company. We’ve got a quick, fun update for you on the tumbler ruler.

This is a tumbler quilt, made with the “Hoopla” Layer Cake, and it’s made with a big 10” tumbler. Let me show you quickly how we do that. I’m going to set this over here so you can see it. Hopefully, many of you are using the small tumbler. We did a tutorial on that. It fits on the little charm pack with very little waste. Well, guess what Natalie’s done it again. We have the large tumbler, on the 10” layer Cake. Fit’s perfectly! Very little waste!

Really a fun, quick idea for these tumbler or bucket quilts. Makes a darling pattern goes together just like the small tumbler, easily, and quickly. And the fun thing, I want you to take a look at this edge we’ve used the tumbler as a pattern, laid the center of our ruler on the straight edge of the fabric and just cut half blocks to make this darling border where it zig-zags in and out.

Well, we hope you enjoy this quick tutorial update from the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

I am going to use the large tumbler template to make a laptop or twin size quilt for a solider.  Do you know about how many tumblers I will need for a quilt?  We are going to be doing this for the Quilts of Valor – Under Our Wings, and hope this will be an easy one for new quilters.

This is a great quilt for beginners. One layer cake (or 42 pieces of fabric) makes a nice lap size quilt. A great quilt for a great cause!

The quilting guild I belong to is going to make Quilts of Valor quilts “Under our Wings.”  I purchased this template from you and have cut out almost 700 of these blocks for this.  I made a top of some of these and it looks nice.  Think military personnel will like.

That is so awesome to hear!!  I am sure that your quilts will be loved!!  Thanks for letting us know of the amazing things you are doing!!

I’m a beginner quilter.  I love how fun and easy your tutorials make quilting seem.  :)  I would like to make this in a twin and king size.  How many charm packs would I need to purchase for each size?  Thanks!

    • Natalie

I would guess around 6-8 charm packs for a twin, and 12-15 to make a king. Just guesses but you should get pretty close! I hope this helps!

I have the small and large tumbler tool. I would like to make a queen size quilt with the large. Would 2 layer cakes be enough? Thanks, ella ruth

    • JenM

Yes, two layers cakes will make 84 blocks that finish at about 9.5″. So, before borders you could get 80″ x 90″ or 90″ x 90″. Have fun!
