Half square triangles (HSTs) are a common quilting block used to create a variety of designs and patterns. HSTs are created by sewing two triangles together along the diagonal to form a square.

To make a half square triangle, you will need two pieces of fabric that are the same size. To determine the size of the fabric pieces, add 7/8 inch to the finished size of the HST you want. For example, if you want a 4-inch finished HST, you will need two fabric squares that are 4 7/8 inches.

To make the HST, place the two fabric squares right sides together and draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew a 1/4-inch seam on each side of the drawn line. Cut along the drawn line to separate the two triangles.

Press the seam allowance to one side, either open or to one side depending on your preference. Trim the two sides of the HST that have the dog ears (the small triangles sticking out) to create a perfect square.

Once you have made your HSTs, you can arrange them in various ways to create different quilt block designs. Common HST quilt blocks include the Flying Geese, Pinwheel, and Chevron patterns.

HSTs are a versatile and popular quilting block that can be used to create a variety of designs and patterns. With a little practice, you can quickly and easily make these blocks and incorporate them into your next quilting project.
