In quilting, sashing refers to the strips of fabric that are sewn between quilt blocks to separate them and create a cohesive design. Sashing can be used to add contrast, to tie together different colors or fabrics, or to frame individual blocks.

To add sashing to a quilt, follow these steps:

Measure the size of your quilt blocks and cut strips of fabric to the desired width for your sashing. The width of the sashing can vary depending on the look you want to achieve, but common widths are between 1 inch and 2 inches.

Sew the sashing strips to the sides of each quilt block, using a quarter-inch seam allowance. Repeat for each block.

Sew additional sashing strips between each row of blocks, again using a quarter-inch seam allowance.

Sew sashing strips to the top and bottom of each row of blocks, using a quarter-inch seam allowance.

Press all seams in the same direction to create a neat and tidy finish.

Optional: add cornerstones to the intersections of your sashing strips for added interest. Cornerstones are small squares of fabric that are sewn into the corners where the sashing strips meet.

Sashing can be a great way to create a cohesive and polished look for your quilt, and it can be used in a variety of styles and color combinations. Experiment with different widths and colors of sashing to create a unique design that highlights your quilt blocks.
