The Kansas Dugout block is a classic quilt block pattern that dates back to the 19th century. The pattern is named after the dugout homes that settlers in Kansas and other western states built by digging into the ground and using dirt and sod to construct their homes. This can be a playful block that uses up lots of fun colored scraps.

The Kansas Dugout block is a simple four patch design and goes by many names: The oldest name is Godey Design, and other names include Church Window, Five Cross, Going Home, Grandmother's Dream, Lattice Block, Lovely Patchwork, Ozark Tile, Puss in the Corner, and Road to Tennessee.
