Quilt labels are an important part of the history of a quilt, as they provide valuable information about its provenance and can help to document its journey through time. They can also serve as a way for the quilter to leave a personal message or dedication to the recipient of the quilt, or to future generations who may inherit it.
When creating a quilt label, it is important to use archival-quality materials that will stand up to the test of time. Many quilters choose to write the information on the label with a permanent fabric pen, while others may use embroidery or other embellishments to make the label more decorative.
Overall, quilt labels are a way for quilters to leave their mark on their creations and ensure that their work is remembered and appreciated for generations to come.
Amy has a few tips for creating gorgeous labels:
1. You always want to do a draft (sketch) first before you take your permanent marker to your fabric. You can make it as detailed or rough as you want - use it as practice if you need it, or just lay things as a "dress rehearsal."
2. Use tools as you want them. Freehand or rulers - make it look how you want!
3. Clip your fabric to cardboard or something sturdy so it doesn't move while you're writing.
4. You can use pencil to make marks on your fabric before you start, or just jump in with your fabric pens!
