Cut:
1 square, 7.5" x 7.5" (orange)
5 squares, 4.25" x 4.25" (black)
2 squares each, 3.875" x 3.875" (orange, red and yellow)
Cut the large orange square into 4 triangles (one cut on each diagonal).
Cut the smaller orange, red and yellow squares into two triangles (one cut on the diagonal)
Cut the black squares into 4 triangles each (one cut on each diagonal).
Start with your orange square at the center and add small black triangles on each side (creating a square in a square). Trim the corners.
Next assemble 8 flying geese units using red and orange triangles and the smaller black triangles.
Now take two flying geese units and sew them together on the longer side so that both points are facing the same direction. Once those are assembled, add a yellow triangle to the top of the unit (it will look like a house with the yellow triangle as the roof). Trim the dog ears.
Now you'll assemble the block. Place your square in square on point, and add your four flying geese/house units to each side. Place your remaining orange triangles in the open spaces to square off the block.
Sew rows together on the diagonal, nesting seams as you go.
