Here are the basic steps to create a self-bound quilt:
Prepare the quilt top: Once you have finished quilting your quilt top, trim any excess batting and backing fabric so that they are even with the edges of the quilt top.
Cut the backing fabric: Cut a piece of backing fabric that is 2 to 4 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides. This will allow for a border that can be folded over to create the self-binding.
Fold the border: Fold the backing fabric border up and over the quilt top edge, folding the raw edge under to enclose it. Pin or clip in place around the entire quilt.
Stitch the border: Using a decorative stitch or a straight stitch close to the folded edge, stitch around the entire quilt to secure the folded border in place.
By using the self-binding technique, you can create a neat, finished edge to your quilt without having to add a separate binding. This technique works well for smaller quilts, such as baby quilts or lap quilts, and can also be used for larger quilts with some modifications to the technique.
