The key to having a functional sewing space is having the right place for everything. Here are Karen's tips on getting (and staying) organized!

1. Don't compare your space to a photo shoot! Make your space functional and easy to clean.

2. Declutter first! You can't organize clutter - get rid of what you need to so what you have fits into the capacity of your space. Check out Karen's other decluttering challenges!

3. Start with your foundations. Build your space so it flows with your regular usage. Check out the sewing triangle: the sewing machine, the cutting station and the pressing station.

4. Question why everything is there? Does it belong there? Is there as useful there? Store your tools as close to where you use them as possible, and make the tools you use the most prominent.

5. Don't just dump all like items in one small space. Split them up where they will be used. Store occasionally tools towards the back of spaces - keep the ones you reach for the most up front.

6. There is no one container for all organization. Think about what items you want to store and what storage system (or container) fits the need and is easy to access.

7. Always consider light and power! You'll want to see your work and you'll need power for your iron and sewing machine. Organize your space around where you'll need light and power. Extension cords are ok, but manage those power stations (cords, flat space, etc.)

8. Accept that there will be some fussy and fiddly, but don't settle for something that just sort of works. Think outside the box and make it work for you. Find the pain points in your flow.

9. If you organized your space one way last year, you can always change it up so it works better for you. Don't just do it the way it's always been done!
