[Music] hi I'm Jenny from the Missouri Star Quilt Company take a look at this fun quilt behind me isn't this fun isn't it pretty I mean it's just a great quilt the whole quilt is a charm pack quilt so easy you're going to love it it's one of those quilts that looks like you worked really hard but it's really easy it's basically made of two blocks here's this block right here you can see right that one and then there's a sashing block right here right here so it's just two separate units and I'm going to show you how to do this so to make this quilt you're going to need one printed charm pack right here and this is Wish by Valerie Wells for free spirit we used and just one charm pack then you're going to need some white charm squares right here they you're going to need about a 100 charm squares which is just like two and a half charm packs so it's not like a ton it's just two and a half charm packs or you can use yardage and that's like 2 and a/4 yards uh you're also going to need a pop color we chose this teal blue and again they're just 5in charms and um I think on this one you need like oh like 48 squares so just a little over a charm pack uh and that would be about a yard of fabric also if you're doing yardage for your first border um you're going to need about uh what let's see half a yard for the first border and then a yard and an eighth for for this second border and so it just makes a really easy and quick quilt the fun thing about this quilt is that you need three block units you're going to need the pop color and your white we're just going to call this teal and white you're going to need a teal and your color and this block is then going to become this block so they're all made just the same and really easy so to start I'm going to show you how to make this unit right here and this is how all the units are made and I'm just going to show you this one you're going to put your white and your pop color together right sides and then we're just going to sew down the sides that's all we do sew down the sides so let's head over the sewing machine and just sew down those sides qu of an inch I'm just going to flip this around now and go the other direction and then going to clip that off and um I'm just going to clip this thread up here and so you can see I've sewn just right down the sides and then we're going to cut this unit in half right here like this slide our ruler we're putting our half mark on the edge of the fabric and it's 2 and 1/2 in because it's a 5-in charm pack and we're cutting it directly in half then we're going to press these open so we head over here and just press these open I put my dark fabric on the top uh so that the um the seam is now pressed to the dark side so that you won't see it through that back and that is our first unit for this block right here next we're going to need to sew our dark color to our pop Fabric or our print color I mean so we're going to sew one of these to this and we're just going to do exactly the same way and I've already done that with this one and cut it in half already so now to make this a square block that it's going to fit in the corner we're going to cut a half an inch off so we're just going to come along here and put our ruler on the half inch line and just go ahead and slice this off so it's just this tiny little piece but it makes the block square and that's what we want as a square block then you need to snowball two of the corners and to Snowball the corners you're going to need a 2 and 1/2 in white square um and you can get this out of your yardage and so we're going to put it on opposite sides so one on the blue side and one on the printed side and we need a sew line and so we we head over to the um ironing Machine and Iron these in half diagonally and I've already done that to two of these right here so you can see I'll I'll put these on here so you can see that we have the iron line we're going to sew right on that line and I have two of them cuz I'm just fast that way and then we're just going to sew right here and right here now one of the things that I want to mention is that you need to make sure when you sew these that they're always on the same Corners so I like to you know take my blocks and make sure that my blue is facing me and that my corner goes on the right hand side and on the charm pack side it's going to go up on the left hand side if you get those mixed up it won't work just trust me I can't even tell you how I know that but it won't work you all know how I know that don't you all right so we're just going to sew right on this sew line gives us a nice straight square and we just I'm just going to flip this around and do the other side and you just line up your corner with the side of your block and then you sew right on that diagonal that you've ironed in there you can draw the line too if you're more comfortable with that and then we're going to trim off these extra pieces right here like that and I just I just lay my ruler um I put the Stitch line on the/ quarter inch line and then just cut those off so that it's you know you gives you a little bit of extra room so your stitches won't pull and then I'm just going to iron this open all right so to make this block we have all of our pieces done we're ready to assemble the block you're going to need four of those and you're going to need four of your blue and whites and you're going to need one white piece for the center so we're going to start by putting our white piece in the center and you're just going to love how you when you see how this goes together it's so cool so then you're going to put your blues and you're going to put the white next to the white just like this and I like to do I like to assemble the block first rather rather than doing in rows I like to do it in in parts so I can see how it's coming together I don't know if that made any sense to you at all but it makes sense to me and then we're going to take our little blocks like this and we're going to put the charm pack side and the white side toward the white so this on the charm pack side with the white um half square triangle on it it goes toward the middle and I'm going to put that in there and the same with this one in here and over there so look at that how cool is that that's how easy it goes together and then you sew it together just like you've sewn every other nine patch you know in your life and so we just lay them right sides together on this and I'll do a row for you so you can see how that goes just like this quarter of an inch we never lose our quarter then we're going to do this one over here and sometimes just like that when I took it off the sewing machine it was upside down so I'm going to bring it back over here and make sure that I'm in the right place because checking is easier than picking so that looks right and we'll sew that one together all right I'm going to press this open and I am going to push these to the outsides cuz my middle one I press to the inside what's most important when when you press is that it lays flat that's what you're going for you're you're shooting for a flat block so then now is the only time when you're matching comes into play and what you're going to do is when you put these rows together like this you're just going to make sure these little seams Nest right here if you want to put a pin in there you can just to Nest so nice and easy and then you can you can sail down the side of that and then it won't take you very long at all there we go and then you can sew that row together and then you can sew this row together so now we're at the end of this row here and we can just go pull our pins out and then uh iron it open and we will have a finished block so let's take a look at this iron this baby open I love my shot of steam and there we have it our finished block so again remember I told you this quilt is made up of two block sets so here's our first block so the next block we're talking about is the sashing block right here and it is super easy so to make this block you're going to have your Center 5-in charm and you're going to take a a regular uh charm square and a white square and you're going to sew them together on the sides just like we did the other blocks so we're going to sew it straight down the sides and we're going to cut it in half and I have one here that I've cut in half you can see it was originally it was a charm and it has the sewing on the sides and I just cut it in half and then we're going to press these open and we're going to sew them to either side like this now obviously I have two from the same charm pack but you'd want to mix them up and make different ones and uh so it'll look real Scrappy and cute just like this one here so I'm going to show you how I laid these out because that is the fun part so what we're going to do with these let me move some of my stuff so I can show you how this is going to look so in between every block As We Lay them out there's going to be a sashing block so I'm just going to put three of them up here and um so you can see where I'm going with this cuz it gets it's going to get pretty big pretty fast let me start start here we'll put one here and then a sashing block in between like this and then a sashing block in between and you can see I have some made up over here and that's how the rows go just like that your block your sashing block your block your sashing block your block I mean as many as you want as big as you want then for the next row it's just as easy because you're going to put you're going to put a sashing block let me turn turn this one around so we got mix them up your sashing block and your 5in square and your sashing block and your 5-in Square just like that and then you just start all over with your block your sashing block your block I mean it's just as easy as that we hope you enjoyed this tutorial on the merrygoround quilt from the Missouri Star Quilt Company
