Foundation paper piecing is a quilting technique that involves sewing fabric onto a paper template to create precise and complex quilt blocks. It is often used for quilt designs that require precise shapes and angles, such as star blocks, geometric designs, and detailed pictorial quilts.

To begin foundation paper piecing, a pattern is printed or traced onto lightweight paper or freezer paper. The paper template is then placed on the wrong side of the fabric, and the fabric is secured with pins or a small amount of glue. The first fabric piece is then sewn onto the paper along the printed lines, with the fabric facing up and the paper facing down.

Subsequent fabric pieces are added in numerical order, with each piece sewn onto the previous one, following the printed lines on the paper template. The fabric is folded back over the seam allowance, and the excess fabric is trimmed away, leaving a precise seam allowance.

Once all of the fabric pieces have been sewn onto the paper template, the excess paper is trimmed away, and the block is removed from the paper. The resulting block is precise and accurate, with all of the seams perfectly aligned.

Foundation paper piecing can be a time-consuming and intricate process, but it allows quilters to create complex designs with precise angles and shapes. It is a popular technique among quilters who enjoy the challenge of creating intricate quilt blocks and designs.
