hi I'm Jenny from the Missouri Star Quilt Company I want you to take a look at this cute little quilt behind me isn't this fun this is just a take on the disappearing nine patch if you haven't seen the video on the disappearing nine patch check it out in the links below but all I did with this one was the same nine patches sewed together but I window painted them I just sashed each one and put it together like a window pane so to make this quilt behind me what you're going to need is a charm pack and I've used the Bal darks by benex for this little sample one and you're going to need one charm pack and you're going to need some 1 and 1/2 in solid strips now you can cut these out of yardage it'll take about a half yard um per charm pack or we have the new honey bun strips the inch and a half that that are coming in solids so uh so I think that really cool I'm really excited about the honey bun solids that we're getting uh cuz it make gives you a whole new dimension to your your uh sashings which I like to use the pre-cuts for so to make this window plane block what I did was I chose nine squares and you're just going to sash them so I have six of them sewn together here and then you can see I have three more and I just sewed the little inch and 1/2 piece along the side of two of them and then the third one makes up the Third thir row and then we're going to put our sash right in here in the middle so this will make the whole window pane block so let's go ahead and sew this row together it's all done quarter of an inch we're just going to go ahead and Stitch this down there we go then I'm going to grab that last block over here and we're just going to sew it right to the end so this will make our whole row right here and there we go now we're going to iron this open let me scoot this one over here that's our gold block we know what we're shooting for all right so I'm just going to iron this nice and flat and then we're going to go ahead and sew our uh our inch and a half strip to the row and then we'll attach this row to the block so I'm going to take this over here the sewing machine and going to go ahead and attach this on here so you'll notice that I'm using a really light colored thread on this normally I would use black but I wanted you to be able to see these stitches so you can tell if I'm making a a mistake or not no not really just so you can see them and see it's just a straight quarter of an inch and I just clip that off with my scissors and then we're going to come over here and press this open I like to press it open before I attach it to the next row because it's inch and a half when you're dealing with these smaller strips it's just easier if they're just ready to go so now what we're going to do and I need to show you this carefully because this is one of those things that um tends to be little hard for Quilters because this is a shorter piece it won't be near as hard but when we want to line up sashing rows like this we want to make sure that they're exact we don't want our Corners to um you know we don't want to line them up and then have it come off this way so we want to make sure that these are exactly right so what I do is I kind of fold my piece down so I make sure that this sashing row is lined up with this sashing row bring it up here and then I'm going to stick a pin in there so let me grab a pin over here this is one of those times that I really do pin because I want to make sure that my my rows line up and I don't get it all sewn together and have it like straight up here and a little wonked off to the side I I I just I just and I don't want to rip so I pin so we've got that ready we're going to sew this piece together so let's head over to this sewing machine and just sew that down there we we go this makes such a great quick quilt I mean it's just so fun these are great for table toppers great for baby blankets just any little thing you need them for all right so now we'll see if uh if we lined up exactly and we did pretty good there so I'm going to press this now so now what we have to do is we have to cut these apart this is the trick of the disappearing nine patch so you have your nice big block like that and we are going to cut it apart this way and this way so we're going to lay our ruler because we know our block started out at 5 in and we took one seam already so it's already at 4 and 3/4 so we're measuring in 2 and 1/4 in uh from the black uh paint line and if mine isn't totally exact I kind of scoot that fabric around so it will line up this is where your qu inch you want to make sure that's really pretty close so we're going to line that up then we're going to flip turn this whole block around line it back up here and cut it again so two and a and 1/4 in from the from the uh the edge of your window pane right there and really you may want to measure that because it's basically it's like smack in the middle and if you have a hard time finding that measurement you can always fold your block a half and iron it so you have a cut line on that makes it easier sometimes so now take a look at this we have four blocks and we have all these little pieces that looked like we pieced a lot but we didn't but all you did was sew big pieces together and cut them apart so let me show you there's a couple of ways to lay these out my favorite way of course is to put them together so you never ever have to match a seam and that's how this one is done behind me it just kind of throws those um those lines in randomly so I have a bunch of blocks here out of a charm pack you'll get four nine patches and out of four nine patches you're going to get four Cuts so we're dealing with 16 blocks so that's 4x4 so I'm just going to put them together here and turn them so I never ever have to La uh line up a seam and we're going to mix up our colors and you'll see really quickly how fun this comes together let me see here we're going to put this one over here and make sure no seams line up and these these boutiques are gorgeous there is that one let's get another one down here in the pile turn turn turn eventually they won't line up look how pretty this is though put a few more up here so this is just make great little table toppers great little baby blankets just all kinds of fun ways so you get the general idea of how this Quil is going to go together and no matter what fabric you use they all look different this one looks completely from this this one and I also made one here that is out of christmy kind of fabric how cute is that and they just go together so quick and easy so we hope you enjoyed this tutorial on the window pane disappearing nine patch from the Missouri Star Quilt Company
