Liz selected some gorgeous foil fabric Kona for the 6 gifts around the table. Then she selected complementary yardage for the bows and background.
Next she grabbed her templates - her half hexagon, her equilateral triangle and her square. This project will involve some y-seams, but have no fear - Liz will help you every step of the way.
Liz starts by cutting out her fabric according to the pattern.
First Liz starts with the gift block. The block is made in two parts (two rectangles, with a ribbon in between them. Liz always sews with the ribbon fabric on top, and uses a 1/4" seam. Press the seams for the ribbon outside towards the gift wrap (the darker color).
Liz's tip: Finger press first, so you can press lightly and quickly with the iron.
Next Liz turns her attention to the hexagon. She cuts the hexagon in half to make way for the ribbon. Then she adds her squares, but folds them so they form the shape she wants. Sew from the grey side this time and finger press your seams towards the ribbon, so your seams will eventually nest.
Next Liz joins the top of the gift to the bottom of the gift, nesting her seams at the ribbon joins. Finally, she appliques the loose elements of the ribbons so they don't catch.
Now repeat the process five more times so you have 6 full gifts. Now it's time to piece the halves of the table runner together.
It's time for the Y-seams. Liz arranges 3 gifts so the hexagon edges are touching and she joins three presents together, leaving 1/4" at the beginning and end of each seam open for her Y-seams. Then she sews a straight line just along the hexagon edge, joining two presents, and then adding a third in the same way.
Now it's time to add a half hexagon on the top, and three triangles to round out the outer edge. Start with the half hexagon. Mark your 1/4" dots so you know where to pivot the needle and join the hexagon at the center of the table runner to the three gifts in one seam. Snip at the joins if you need to, to help the seams lay flat taking care not to cut your seams themselves. Press lightly.
Now repeat the process to add the triangles in between the gifts. (Finishing your Y-seams by marking the dots at 1/4" from the end where the seams meet.
