How to use Sashing with Sampler Blocks - a quilting tutorial with Karen Brown

To Sash or not to sash? Today Karen Brown of Just Get it Done Quilts is taking a pile of orphan blocks, totally mismatched in terms of colour and pattern and using sashing to turn them into a cohesive quilt. But first there are many decisions that you need to make. Karen shows you the ones that she had to make to finally turn this UFO into a quilt that she is proud to gift away.

Check out Karen's tips for turning those orphan blocks into gorgeous quilts you can enjoy!

1. Lay out your blocks and ask yourself the following questions:

- How many blocks do you have?
- Are they all the same size?
- Is there a common theme?
- Is there a common fabric?
- Is there a common color?

2. Let those ideas percolate a bit and inspiration will strike!

3. Sashing is great for framing blocks and adding some cohesion to a quilt. It also means you won't need to match as many seams!

4. Try setting blocks on point if you want to add movement to the quilt!

5. Lay out your blocks they way you want them. Take a photo and check out the black/white values and rearrange until you're happy with the final layout. A design wall is great here!

6. With tons of colors in the blocks, it's often best to use a desaturated color.

7. Sashing can be any size, but the eye prefers it when the sashing is proportional to the block. The wider the sashing, the more attention is drawn away from the blocks. Plus your quilt can get large really quickly!

8. Square up your blocks, and add sashing strips. You may want to use a template so you can sew your sashing to the blocks and account for any that may run small.
