Hi, it’s Jenny from the Missouri Star Quilt Company, and a while ago we did a post on this quilt, but I thought I would do a tutorial and show you how to do it.

Now we totally have to attribute this to Natalie. This was her brainchild. She woke up with the light on one morning and this was what we came up with. So come with me over to the table and I’ll show you how to do it.

So what we did on this quilt was we took the “Make Life” Layer Cake. Any Layer Cake will do. I’ve got a “Whimsy” here, but I’ve also got a 10” square cut out, and what we’re going to do is, you use one Layer Cake and one Jelly Roll from the same line.

So, what we’re going to do is we’re going to cut this directly in half. It’s 10” so, we’re going to cut it at 5”, and your Jelly Rolls are 40” long, approximately.

And so, because these are 10” on the sides you’re going to cut your Jelly Rolls into four 10” pieces. So there’s virtually no waste on this at all, because your squares are 10”, your Jelly Roll’s are four 10” pieces. That equals 40”.

Then what you’re going to do is you’re going to take those Jelly Roll strips and you’re going to sew them to either side of the blocks. Just like this. We’ll go do that at the sewing machine and meet you right back here at the table.

So, now we’ve sewn this together ¼” on each side and pressed them open. So, they lay nice and flat, and basically what we’re making here is a fat fence rail. Whenever you do a fence rail you have to make sure that your blocks are the same width, as they are wide.

So, you just want to measure those, and this one measures out at 9”. Which means we still have our 10” side, which in order to lay our blocks evenly, we’re going to have to cut 1” off  so that they lay evenly. So, we’ll put our
cutter right here and we’re going to cut 1” off the end of these. What that does is it enables us to lay our blocks side by side, turning the pattern each time and having it be a nice basket weave or fence rail look to it.

Now I want to show you one more quilt that we did using the “Blush” and this pattern it’s so simple, but it looks beautiful no matter what we use. So, here’s the “Blush.” This is a beautiful quilt. One of our regular customers made this with the “Blush”. I’ve even seen it done in a Christmas print. It’s
just adorable and so simple.

So remember, one Layer Cake, one Jelly Roll, and you’ve got it made! Here’s another tutorial from the Missouri Star Quilt Company.
