Each larger block in this pattern has 4 colors. Misty starts by picking out the four layer cake squares she'd like to use, and cutting them in half diagonally (corner to corner).
The next step is to take your background squares and, using the Burst Block template and lining it up in the corners and make the two cuts. Keep the triangles stacked together - you'll need them later!
Now Misty arranges her four quadrants and groups her fabrics together so she knows how to sew them together (keeping the orientation correct!). Then she can just sew one section at a time and be confident it will work out at the end.
Next she assembles her first block. She begins by sewing one of the outside triangles to the center wedge. The lengths won't be quite the same, but it's important to line things up at the bottom point. Then add the second triangle to the other side, making sure you have plenty of overhang, keeping your straight edge on the bottom.
Press your seams and take the square back to the cutting mat. Now take your template and put line #1 on your seam, line it up on the bottom edge of fabric, and trim your corner triangles to side. Save your scraps for another project! Repeat for the second side. Now line up the 45 degree angle line at the bottom and square off your edges, and repeat for the other corner.
Now grab your side triangles and add those to either side of the burst. Make sure that you're joining the triangles correctly - they look the same, but they aren't and the angles won't work out to a square block. Again, align your bottom corner, leaving the overhand at the top - you can square that off later! Sew both sides, press your seams and trim your block. Here you can use a 10" square ruler to trim your block to size.
Then you can sew your four blocks together in a four patch, creating your finished horizon blocks. The finished quilt is three by three blocks (for a total of 9).
