Summer Waltz is made of two blocks that come together as one, creating a secondary design. This is also a great one for blocks full of color and texture.

You'll need one layer cake, as well as some fabrics for accent yardage. Pay attention to where you place your fabrics as you'll create different looks in the secondary designs depending on how you arrange your colors.

Charisma starts with the layer cake block. You'll take a layer cake square, and 4 small squares (3.5"), plus 8 half square triangles. Add your half square triangle to the squares, creating a larger triangle unit. Then add them to the layer cake square (trimmed down to 9").

Charisma's tip: Press the layer cake in half to create marks at the midpoints of each side. Use this midpoint to line up your triangle pieces. You will have small dog ears to trim at the end!

To make the second block, you'll use a layer cake square for the center (trimmed to 4 3/4") and 4 petal squares (also 4 3/4"). Join the three squares into a strip (petal, center, petal) and then attach triangles to each end of the petals.

Next create the corners with a petal square, and three triangles. Add the two corners to your center strip, creating a square block.

After you've assembled all of your blocks (both one and two) you'll arrange your quilt top, alternating blocks as you go, creating that secondary pattern!
