Missouri Star Quilt Company has invited me here to teach y'all how to make this precious apron from their new template set. My name is Tammy. I'm your favorite sewing teacher. I know, only second to Jenny Dawn. Let's go make it. [music] My name is Tammy. I'm your favorite sewing teacher. I know, besides Genie Dawn. But I'm here today because I want to show you this new template set that Missouri Star Quilt Company just came out with. It's called piece of cake, the celebrate template builder set. And y'all, it comes with all of the things. There's a balloon, cupcake paper. Here is the icing for the cupcake, a party hat, all of the hat toppers, your icing for your cake, and the cake comes in a bunch of different layers. So, you can make one layer cake or two layers or three layers, however many you want. the we have a regular balloon and then a heart-shaped balloon. And sweet Abby that y'all can't see is filming videoing over there and she said, "Do you need the paper pulled off the back of any of those?" And I said, "Absolutely not." Because y'all know what? I didn't know that the paper comes off the back. I didn't know. I had no idea. I feel like that's something I should know, right? But I didn't know. And I did a hexagon quilt because Missouri Star gave me a hexagon template and all of my audience yelled at me. They said, "Take the paper off the back." And I was like, I mean, I left it there on purpose. Just kidding. I had no idea it came off. So, when you get your template set, take your paper off. Okay? Because when you take the paper off, then you can see through the template set to your fabric. That's my helpful tip of the day. All right? So, I have this template set that's all things celebrate. And on the box, it shows you all the things you can make. We have a cake, a party hat, a cupcake, another cupcake, a cake with a cake stand. Here's our precious little cake stand. A second and third party hat. Here's a separate cake. And then the heart and the regular balloons. What we're going to create today is an apron. And our apron has a party hat and a cupcake. Now, this would be so super cute on the front of a high chair banner. It would be precious on a pennant. It would be really cute on a um wall flag to hang up for birthdays throughout the year or on your front door. Would be super cute. Could do all the things with it, but I think the apron is super perfect. The fabric that we're using today is Snips of Color by Henry Glass. And these right here are sorbet from ColorWorks Solids. And that's what I've chosen for the icing and the hat top and then this Henry glass fabric for the bottom. You can use any fabric you want. And these are great stash busters because you have a bunch of pieces that aren't really big enough to do anything with, but they're too big to get rid of. Any of these appliques are great for that. We're going to sew ours on today. But if you wanted to make this really easy and you wanted to do it no sew, then just get some so light fusible adhesive. Now, when you get your fusible adhesive, you want to make sure that it's sewable. Because if you get something that's not sewable, then what happens is it gums up your sewing machine when you sew it. But if you get the sewable, you iron it onto the back of your fabric, you pull a piece off, you put it down, iron it back on. So then your fabric is here, and you don't have to sew it, but you could if you wanted to. Now, we've laid ours right here, and I'm just going to straight stitch around the edge of all of our pieces. That's going to make it a raw edge applique. If I didn't want it to be raw edge, if I didn't want the fray, I love the fray. And currently, it's all the rage. But if you didn't want the fray, all you had to do is just zigzag around it. Or if you wanted to make it look like it was from one of those cutter quilts, just put some flannel behind it. It gives it some lift and makes it beautiful. So, what we're going to do next is figure out the thread that we want to sew this with. Now, I'm going to change my thread color based on what I'm sewing. I probably would not sew this in white. And when I look at this, I know that I'm going to sew this in pink because this is pink. This is pink. And although this is blue, the pink is going to be fine here. I'm not going to change it just for this. But if you wanted to, I want you to. Now, Missouri Star has set me up with this fantastic box of cotton thread stash builder. So, I'm going to pull out the pinks. We're going to put it right here. I'm going to show you what I'm using, and I'm going to tell you why. Okay. So, we have these three colors of pink. You see those? I'm going to use this color right here. So, I'm going to pull this. And I'm using it because it matches this really pretty and this really pretty. And it's going to blend in with the rest of this. And let me show you something else about this thread that I'm in love with is when you pull on it, it just comes unthreaded. It just starts. The spool of thread just starts. You don't have to pull it out of the little notch. If I can find the end. There we go. Okay, we've cut our applique out. We've decided that we want to sew it on, although we might make some that are no sew. We've chosen our thread color. Now, let's go to our sewing machine and sew it. Okay, so now we're going to sew it. And all we're going to do is place it underneath the presser foot. Now, this snazzy machine is a Bernett B77. And you don't lower the presser foot. It lowers on its own. So, you and I are going to learn this together. We're going to start and then we're going to sew a few stitches and back stitch. And we're going to straight stitch all the way around. All right. Back stitching. And now we're just following the edge of our fabric with the edge of our presser foot. Do you see that? And when we go around this curve, it's just going to be slow and steady. Okay. So, we've sewn this on a machine that I'm not used to. Do you see how wide this is right here? You can do one of two things. You can come and zigzag around the outside. You could sew again around the outside or you can just leave it. I'm just going to leave it because I think it's fine. But if you wanted your sewn closer, then just come back and do it again. Now, let's do the cupcake. Now, when it comes to sewing this, we're just going to sew up, down, up, down, up, down. Slow [music] and steady to make it perfect. And that's it. [music] You now have the cutest apron ever. We're going to take our pins out. And our pins go in our pin cushion or in our project. They don't go in our mouth. They don't go in our shirt. They don't go on the table. Project. Pin cushion. Project. Pin cushion. Repeat after me. In my project or in the pin cushion. Because trust me, it is not great when you find them where they're not supposed to be. So, our apron is done and we're ready to host whatever party you're throwing. Birthday party, retirement party, any kind of celebration. My name is Tammy. I'm your favorite sewing teacher and I would love for you to come sew with me.
