What You Will Need:
Quilt top
Batting
Backing fabric
Quilting machine (home machine or longarm)
Quilting thread
Quilting gloves (optional)
Ruler or straight edge
Marking tool
Step 1: Preparing Your Quilt
Layer your quilt top, batting, and backing fabric together, and baste them in place using your preferred method. Leah recommends using safety pins or spray basting for this step.
Step 2: Creating the Heart Design
Using a ruler or straight edge and a marking tool, draw a large heart shape onto your quilt top. You can make the heart as big or as small as you like, depending on the size of your quilt.
Step 3: Home Machine Quilting
To quilt the heart design using your home machine, begin by selecting your quilting thread and inserting it into your machine. Leah recommends using a walking foot for this step, as it will help to prevent puckering and ensure even stitches. Begin quilting around the perimeter of the heart shape, slowly working your way inward. You can create a variety of designs within the heart shape, or simply quilt around the edges of the heart for a simple yet elegant look.
Step 4: Longarm Quilting
To quilt the heart design using a longarm machine, begin by selecting your quilting thread and loading your quilt onto the machine. Using the marking tool, mark the heart shape onto your quilt top. Next, begin quilting around the perimeter of the heart shape, slowly working your way inward. You can create a variety of designs within the heart shape, or simply quilt around the edges of the heart for a simple yet elegant look.
Step 5: Finishing Your Quilt
Once you have finished quilting your heart design, trim the excess batting and backing fabric from your quilt. Bind the edges using your preferred binding method, and your quilt is complete!
With Leah's guidance, you can create a beautiful heart design using both home machine quilting and longarm quilting techniques. This project is perfect for quilters who are looking to build their skills and create a stunning quilt. So go ahead and give it a try - you'll be amazed at what you can create!
