The process begins by cutting out paper templates in the desired shapes, typically hexagons, diamonds, or other polygons. These templates are then basted onto the wrong side of fabric pieces. The fabric is folded over the paper template and secured with small, even stitches along the edges. Multiple fabric pieces are stitched together using a whipstitch or ladder stitch, joining the edges of the shapes to form a larger patchwork unit.
The basting stitches temporarily hold the fabric in place until the patches are sewn together, allowing for accurate and neat seams. Once all the patches are sewn together, the paper templates can be removed, revealing the final patchwork design. The paper can either be left in place or removed depending on personal preference.
English paper piecing is known for its portability and versatility. It is often done by hand, making it a popular technique for quilters who enjoy sewing on the go or while socializing. The method allows for precise and intricate designs that can be challenging to achieve with other quilting techniques.
