Free motion quilting is a technique of quilting where you move the quilt sandwich under the needle of a sewing machine to create decorative patterns and designs. Here are the steps to get started with free motion quilting:

Set up your machine: To do free motion quilting, you will need to drop the feed dogs on your sewing machine, which allows you to move the fabric freely in any direction. Refer to your machine's manual on how to do this. Attach a darning or quilting foot to your machine, which has a wide opening to allow for the thickness of the quilt.

Practice on a scrap: Before you begin quilting on your actual project, practice on a scrap of fabric and batting to get comfortable with the technique. You can draw designs on the scrap or just practice moving the fabric in different directions.

Mark your design: If you have a specific design in mind, mark it onto your quilt top with a fabric marker or chalk. You can also create designs freehand if you prefer.

Start quilting: Begin quilting by lowering the needle into the fabric, and then use your hands to move the fabric in the desired direction. The key is to move the fabric at a consistent speed to create even stitches. Practice with different stitch lengths and thread colors to create different effects.

Work in sections: When quilting larger projects, work in smaller sections to prevent bunching and puckering. Start in the center of the section and work your way outwards.

Finish your quilt: Once you have quilted your entire project, trim the edges and add a binding to finish it off.

Free motion quilting takes practice to master, but it can be a fun and creative way to add texture and personality to your quilt projects.
