To make a pinwheel quilt block, you will need four squares of fabric in the same size, but two different colors (two squares in each color).
Trace a diagonal line at a 45 degree angle (from corner to corner) on the back of two of the squares. Now sew the squares together, sewing approximately 1/4" seam to both sides of the diagonal line.
Using a rotary cutter, mat and ruler, cut on the diagonal line, creating 2 half square triangles per set of squares.
Press open and trim to size desired.
Arrange the half square triangles in a 4 patch block, rotating each unit 90 degrees until a pinwheel pattern appears.
Sew the units together, nesting seams and press your final unit, trimming to desired size.
Pinwheel blocks can be used on their own to create a simple yet striking quilt, or they can be combined with other block designs to create more complex quilt patterns.
