To foundation piece, you will need a foundation pattern. You can create your own pattern or use a pre-made one. The pattern is printed onto paper or lightweight fabric and has lines indicating where to sew each piece of fabric.
To begin, place a piece of fabric over the first section of the pattern, making sure it completely covers the area and extends beyond the seam allowance. Pin the fabric in place on the pattern.
Next, place a second piece of fabric right sides together with the first piece. Hold it up to a light source to make sure it covers the second section of the pattern. Sew along the marked line on the pattern, using a shorter stitch length than usual.
Fold the second fabric over, pressing it with an iron. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch. Repeat this process for each section of the pattern until the block is complete.
Once you have completed the foundation piecing, you can remove the paper or lightweight fabric from the back of the block. This will leave you with a precise and intricate block that can be used in a larger quilt project.
